OmniVision Turns Digital Imaging World Upside Down

OmniVision
Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVTI), the world’s largest supplier of CMOS image
sensors, today launched its OmniBSITM architecture, a novel sensor design that
adopts a radically different approach to traditional CMOS image sensor
technology. Using backside illumination (BSI), OmniBSI enables OmniVision to
continue offering improved image quality while extending its pixel roadmap
down to 0.9 micron pixels, which is the key to continued miniaturization of
digital imaging technology. OmniVision developed OmniBSI architecture with the
support of its long-time foundry and process technology partner, Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC).

BSI methodology involves turning the CameraChip(TM) sensor upside down so
that it collects light through what was previously the backside of the sensor,
the silicon substrate. This approach differs from conventional front side
illumination (FSI) image sensors, where the amount of light reaching the
photo-sensitive area is limited, in part, by the multiple metal and dielectric
layers required to enable the sensor to convert photons into electrons. The
FSI approach can block or deflect light from reaching the pixel, ultimately
reducing the fill factor and causing additional problems, such as cross talk,
between pixels. BSI reverses the arrangement of layers so that the metal and
dielectric layers reside below the sensor array, providing the most direct
path for light to travel into the pixel. This novel approach optimizes light
absorption, enabling OmniVision to build a 1.4 micron BSI pixel that surpasses
all the performance metrics of 1.4 micron, and even most 1.75 micron, FSI
pixels.

Apartment Complex And CCPD Use High-Tech Cameras To Team Up On Crime

CORPUS CHRISTI-The managers at the Northside Manor Apartments in the 1400-block of North Alameda have installed surveillance cameras to help put a stop to drug dealing and other criminal activity at the complex. Police are also teaming up with apartment management to keep an eye on crime.

The cameras are not just recording what is going on inside the gate, They record every move, from people getting out of cars, to tenants throwing out the trash.

CCPD Sergeant Denise Pace told KRIS 6 News, “You can see someone is walking in right now, they can identify who is coming into the area.”

Sergeant Pace added that the roughly $30,000 surveillance system monitors problems in the neighborhood as well, so police are keeping a watchful eye on the web when they have time.

“You can see me walking into the office area, and it is live, so when we are monitoring it, you can actively watch who is coming and going, from this area,” Sergeant Pace observed.

Mall security must become priority in South Florida

A trip to the mall shouldn’t require constantly looking over your shoulder, or brushing up on self-defense techniques. But that is what shopping has become in South Florida, where malls are hot spots for violent crime.

The statistics revealed by a South Florida Sun-Sentinel investigative report are alarming. From 2003 to 2007, 508 violent crimes occurred at the 13 major malls in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. Half involved “serious attacks on shoppers and store employees,” according to the report. Most of the victims were women who were robbed, raped or abducted in parking areas by assailants who hid in isolated areas and between vehicles. Many of the cases occurred in broad daylight, and children shopping with their mothers weren’t spared the attacks.

Some cases got plenty of attention. Who can forget the senseless deaths of Nancy Bochicchio and her 7-year-old daughter, Joey, last December at Boca Raton Mall, shot to death and left in their running SUV? But violent crime at shopping malls is a regional problem, and it happens more often than the public cares to believe.

Teens charged in laptop theft at school

WATERBORO – Three Waterboro teenagers were charged with burglary and theft today after a weekend burglary at Massabesic High School, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Two 14-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl were arrested today after officials reviewed tapes from newly installed surveillance cameras. The laptop was recovered from the home of one of the boys.

Bullies under watch

A BIG Brother-type security system installed to reduce vandalism by outsiders at a Brimbank school is being used against school bullies.

Sixteen CCTV cameras worth more than $35,000 monitor the grounds of Albion North Primary School 24 hours a day, and also operate inside building corridors.

School principal Randall Shields said vandals and thieves had forced the drastic security measures, but footage from cameras had been reviewed by teachers looking into schoolyard disputes.

He said the school did not have a bullying problem and that footage needed to be reviewed only occasionally.

The use of cameras had the full support of the school council, which approved them after being briefed on their impact on privacy.

Child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg said a trial of security cameras over just lockers at several schools had led to a marked decrease in bullying.

“What we know at the moment is that one in six kids are bullied weekly,” he said. “Anything that a school can do to reassure the young people that they are being looked after to me is a plus.

“I see it as entirely responsible.”

EPISD Gets Surveillance Cameras

The El Paso Independent School District spent $2 million dollars on video surveillance that will be used at all of the districts middle schools and high schools.

Currently there are two cameras at Andress High School but the district says more will be seen in the next 12 months.

The technology is nothing short of amazing. Each camera view is accessible to police and school staff via the Internet. Police officers on the field can view these cameras as they head out on their way to a call.

Rape: Security firm won’t be axed

Tygerberg Hospital will not fire its security contractor, despite the abduction and rape of a medical student from its grounds on Monday last week.

Horror rape of Springbok hero’s sister

Despite the hospital recently doubling its spending on security, three men armed with knives were able to abduct and rape the woman, believed to be the sister of a Springbok rugby player.

The 20-year-old student was accosted in broad daylight in a parking ground in the sprawling Cape Town hospital complex. She escaped her abductors in Klipheuwel, but not before she had been raped.

Terence Carter, Tygerberg Hospital’s chief executive, said the hospital recently increased its spending on security to about R300000 a month.

Proxim Wireless secures access at Port de La Rochelle

Proxim’s wireless system enables video surveillance, personnel and vehicle access and control of shipping traffic, and offers IP telephony facility at the 470-acre site of the port. The port is said to receive 3,000 visits per day and has 10,000 badge holders.

CTV, Proxim’s partner, has deployed a wireless fibre ring at all port entry points using Tsunami QuickBridge.11 for wireless transmission of video surveillance cameras and access controls. The system can also control access of visiting vehicles.

Simon Snowdon, regional sales manager for France, Benelux and North Africa at Proxim Wireless, said: “A wireless security solution allows a virtually unlimited number of video surveillance cameras to be deployed quickly and cost-effectively. High resolution, real-time video can then be transmitted wirelessly back to the security centre where the wireless network remotely controls the cameras.”

Hizbullah Celebrates Victory in Lebanon as Gov’t Bows to Demands

(IsraelNN.com) The Hizbullah terrorist group celebrated victory over the Lebanese government as the weak US-backed coalition bowed to the Iran and Syria-backed group’s demands.

Nonetheless, Hizbullah men continued to clash with US-backed Lebanese government-supporters even after the Lebanese government authorized its army to backtrack on the state’s attempted assertion of sovereignty following a near-coup.

Clashes in Lebanon began three days earlier when the army was instructed to close down the Iran and Syria-backed group’s alternative communications network and depose the Hizbullah-affiliated head of security at Beirut’s airport. The decision was made by pro-independence factions of the ruling government coalition seeking to stem the influence of Syria and Iran in Lebanon.
