FBI: Courthouse bomb was simple, but deadly

SAN DIEGO – The pipe bomb that blasted the front of the downtown federal courthouse early Sunday morning wasn’t especially sophisticated, but it was purpose-built to injure or kill and was powerful enough to hurl shrapnel in a two-block radius, FBI officials said Monday.

According to FBI Special Agent Keith Slotter, the device consisted of multiple tubes that detonated simultaneously and was packed with more than 50 nails, creating the kind of shrapnel that could have injured or killed passersby. “This was a powerful device,” Slotter said.

Despite the use of multiple pipes – the exact number was not specified – Slotter characterized the bomb as “not overly sophisticated.”

So far, he said, no one has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Judiciary probes allegations against Hizbullah – report

BEIRUT: The Lebanese Cabinet held a lengthy session on Monday that included discussion of recent accusations against Hizbullah regarding the setting up of cameras to monitor Beirut’s International Airport and establishing its own private phone network. The meeting was still in session late as The Daily Star went to press.

Earlier, judicial sources told The Daily Star that judicial authorities have started an investigation into the accusations made against Hizbullah regarding setting up cameras.

The sources said that the military prosecutor, Judge Sami Sader, heard testimony on Monday of a number of soldiers who discovered the existence of cameras placed inside containers in an area that oversees runway 17 of the airport.

According to the sources, some of the security personnel who discovered the cameras also spotted a number of civilians who were taking photos of the airport from the same areas where the containers are placed.

Mini satellite IMS holds key to colourful vistas

As remote-sensing technologies go, the hyperspectral Earth imagery technology that ISRO is testing on the just-launched 83-kg mini satellite IMS-1 is apparently the next thing to watch out for.

Early birds

ISRO wants to be among the early birds in that uncharted band in the coming years. Hyperspectral imagery is not fully in the global market and only a couple of other space agencies are still testing it out.

While ISRO plans to share IMS-1 imageries selectively with research agencies and third world countries, it could be putting a satellite offering hyperspectral data on commercial basis in 2-3 years’ time.

The hyperspectral applications range from mineral exploration and crop health monitoring to national security and surveillance – all of which need a high level of clarity and differentiation of the object. A similar ‘hyspex’ camera is being put on the Chandrayaan-1 mission slated for the third quarter this year. The Moon orbiter aims to map the lunar surface and explore its minerals.

Los Gatos Lunardi’s identify theft case expands to 150 victims

About 150 people who used their bank debit cards at a Lunardi’s Supermarket in Los Gatos have become victims of an identity theft scam. And that number is expected to grow, Los Gatos police Capt. Dave Gravel said.

Thieves managed to alter, or completely swap out, a payment device at one of the store’s checkout stands with a “skimming device” that allowed them to download bank card numbers and personal identification codes, according to police.

The thieves then transferred that bank information onto cloned cards – any card with a magnetic stripe can be used – and made cash withdrawals from ATMs in Southern California.

Customers first began reporting the thefts Sunday. Gravel said police are still trying to determine how much money was stolen.

Surveillance Video Aids in Murder Arrest

The images were captured at the Chowchilla dairy barn where 18-year-old Alberto Ivan Torres had reported for his first day of work on January 19th. That’s when deputies said two men shot Torres and one of his co-workers execution-style. Torres was killed, and the other man was injured.

About ten days later, the Sheriff’s Department released images from a surveillance camera hoping the public would recognize the unusual multi-colored sweatshirt one of the men was wearing.

On Monday, Sheriff Anderson said someone did come forward and provide a tip that led them to the two suspects. “It brought forward a witness that said, ‘I know a guy who had a sweatshirt like that.’ Our detective then went to work to obtain search warrants.”
